Cathrine’s love for cooking started at a young age in her mother’s kitchen. As a little girl, she found joy in learning to prepare different curries. “My Mum played a vital role in my food journey. She was always eager to include me in her cooking, which sparked my passion for learning and gaining knowledge,” Cathrine explains. This early passion continues to drive her daily.

Cathrine believes that staying in touch with current trends and constantly coming up with new ideas is essential. “These moments define what type of chef you are,” she says. According to Cathrine, a kitchen thrives when a chef is innovative, willing to teach, and open to guest requests. “Inspiring others is one of my greatest achievements,” she adds.

If your heart isn’t in it, your mind won’t be either,” she advises. She also encourages staying calm and focusing on goals, especially when facing life’s challenges.

Reflecting on her career, Cathrine acknowledges the setbacks she faced. “I worked for a hotel group for six years without a promotion, despite handling tasks beyond my chef’s grade and training many trainees,” she shares. While this experience was challenging, she is grateful for the life lessons it taught her. It helped her realize her love for sharing knowledge, which ultimately motivated her to seek growth elsewhere.

Her Career Highlights at City Lodge Hotels

Since joining City Lodge Hotels, Cathrine has achieved significant milestones. One of her career highlights was preparing meals for a group of 400 guests during her first few months. It was the largest scale she had ever cooked for, and it was a remarkable experience. Additionally, she played a crucial role in launching the Town Lodge menu for the group, further solidifying her impact.

Cathrine credits her success to the supportive team at Town Lodge Johannesburg Airport. “Working with an amazing team and having the support of General Manager, Ashleigh Hickman, has been incredible,” she says. Cathrine appreciates the unique culture and family vibe within the hotel group. “It’s so much more than just ‘work.’ My capabilities are valued, and I am given tasks that challenge and allow me to express who I am,” she concludes.
