Egypt’s tourism sector is experiencing impressive growth despite geopolitical tensions in the region. The country welcomed over eight million tourists during the first seven months of 2024, marking a significant increase in visitors. Amr El-Kady, CEO of the Egyptian Tourism Authority, predicts that the sector’s earnings will exceed $14 billion by the end of the year. He also expects the total number of tourists to surpass 15 million, surpassing the 14.9 million tourists recorded in 2023.

Egypt’s Tourism Sector: Record-Breaking Revenues

Egypt’s tourism sector saw remarkable growth in the first half of 2024, with tourism revenues reaching an impressive $6.6 billion, up from $6.3 billion during the same period in 2023. The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities announced that 7.069 million tourists visited the country during the first half of the year, setting a new record. This growth is a key part of Egypt’s national strategy to enhance its tourism sector. The government is working to increase the number of inbound airline seats and hotel rooms nationwide, with a long-term goal of welcoming 30 million tourists by 2028.

Key Source Markets and Future Growth

Germany remains Egypt’s largest source of tourists, with the German market contributing around 1.6 million tourists in 2023. This trend is expected to continue in 2024. Russia is another important market, showing a 10% growth in visitor numbers. The Chinese market, however, has shown the most significant expansion. It grew by 60% due to increased airline traffic between China and Egypt, which recently tripled to 28 weekly flights. The Japanese market also experienced notable growth, expanding by 70% compared to the same period in 2023.
