Ethiopian Airlines Group has signed a contract with Dar Al-Handasah Consultants to design and supervise a new Mega Airport City in Bishoftu. This state-of-the-art project, located 40km from Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, aims to revolutionize air travel in Ethiopia. Once completed, the new airport will serve 110 million passengers annually, quadrupling the current capacity of Bole International Airport.

A Visionary Project for Ethiopian Airlines

Ethiopian Airlines’ Group CEO, Mr. Mesfin Tasew, emphasized the project’s significance in making Ethiopia a global aviation hub. He stated, “The project will enhance connectivity, drive economic growth, and prioritize environmentally responsible practices.” This new airport, with its exceptional capacity and world-class facilities, promises to elevate African aviation standards and strengthen partnerships.

Dar’s Director of Operations in Ethiopia, Tariq Al-Qanni, expressed excitement about the collaboration. He said, “We are privileged to work with Ethiopian Airlines on this visionary project. It will provide vital global air connectivity and accelerate economic growth in Ethiopia.” The first phase of the project, set to be completed in 2029. It will handle 60 million passengers, positioning Ethiopia as the leading global gateway to Africa.

State-of-the-Art Facilities

The Mega Airport City will include a 1.1 million sqm terminal with passenger facilities, 126,190 sqm of airline support facilities, and over 100,000 sqm of cargo and airport support facilities. It will also feature an associated airfield and other essential airport infrastructure. The new airport, located at a lower elevation than Addis Ababa, will overcome operational challenges and incorporate elements of Ethiopian heritage, creating a people-centric, sustainable, and future-ready structure.
