Qatar Airways has acquired a 25% stake in Southern Africa’s leading independent regional airline, Airlink. This strategic move aligns with Qatar Airways’ goal to expand its presence across Africa. The investment will strengthen the partnership between the two airlines and bolster their growth in the region.

Qatar Airways Invests in Airlink

The acquisition is part of Qatar Airways’ ongoing efforts to develop its operations in Africa. Airlink, which serves over 45 destinations in 15 African countries, will benefit from enhanced code-sharing with Qatar Airways. This partnership supports Qatar Airways’ strategy to become a key player in Africa’s economic growth.

Qatar Airways Group CEO, Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, expressed confidence in Airlink and Africa’s potential. He highlighted the importance of Africa in Qatar Airways’ future plans. Al-Meer emphasized that this partnership showcases Qatar Airways’ belief in Airlink’s resilience, agility, and strong governance.

Airlink’s CEO, Rodger Foster, welcomed the investment as a significant endorsement of the airline. He believes the partnership will unlock new growth opportunities by improving efficiency and expanding its reach. The deal is expected to boost Airlink’s capacity and marketing efforts, strengthening its existing partnerships with other airlines.

Expanding Routes and Programs

Qatar Airways already operates flights to 29 destinations in Africa. Since December 2020, the airline has added new African cities to its network, including Abidjan, Abuja, Accra, Harare, Kano, Luanda, Lusaka, and Port Harcourt. Additionally, Qatar Airways has resumed flights to Cairo and Alexandria.

This investment further cements Qatar Airways’ role as a major player in Africa’s aviation industry. By partnering with Airlink, Qatar Airways aims to drive economic growth and unlock new opportunities across the continent.
