The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) recently released its 2024 Economic Impact Research (EIR). The report highlights the remarkable growth of Tanzania’s Travel & Tourism sector in 2023. This sector achieved record-breaking economic contributions and visitor spending.

Travel & Tourism added TZS 18.6TN to Tanzania’s economy in 2023. This figure surpasses the previous 2019 peak by 4%, showing the sector’s significant role in the national economy. It now represents 9.5% of the country’s economic output. Such growth underscores the sector’s importance to Tanzania.

Visitor spending also saw impressive increases. International visitor expenditure exceeded TZS 8TN, while domestic spending reached TZS 3.7TN. These numbers are 11.1% and 12.8% higher than in 2019, respectively. The rise in visitor spending is a testament to the sector’s recovery and growth.

Employment in the Travel & Tourism sector climbed to over 1.4MN jobs. This increase added more than 97,300 new jobs. Although still 7.4% below the 2019 peak, the sector remains a vital employer. The positive employment trend is expected to continue.

Future Projections For Tanzania’s Travel & Tourism

WTTC projects continued growth for 2024. The sector’s contribution to Tanzania’s economy is expected to reach TZS 20.3TN, nearly 10% of the total economy. International visitor spending is forecasted to rise to TZS 8.7TN, up 8.5% from 2023. Domestic spending is projected to grow to more than TZS 3.9TN.

Moreover, employment within the sector is anticipated to hit record levels. The number of jobs is projected to exceed 1.5MN, reinforcing the sector’s role as a major employer. WTTC President & CEO Julia Simpson also stated that Tanzania’s Travel & Tourism sector continues to strengthen, driving economic development and job creation.

By 2034, Tanzania’s Travel & Tourism sector is expected to grow to TZS 30.9TN. Job creation will also rise, with total employment projected to reach 2.25MN. This growth will make the sector a crucial component of Tanzania’s workforce.
