For the 2024 survey, over 186,000 readers participated, casting more than 700,000 votes across over 8,700 properties. Hotels are classified into resort hotels, city hotels, inns, or safari lodges based on their location and amenities. They are rated on rooms and facilities, location, service, food, and value. Respondents rate these characteristics from excellent to poor, and the final scores are averages of these responses.

Cape Town remains a favorite for luxury stays. The top three African hotels are in this South African city. Readers praised the stunning scenery, excellent restaurants, and historic attractions. Ellerman House, this year’s top city hotel, received accolades for its impeccable service. Johannesburg’s Saxon Hotel, Villas & Spa, ranked fourth, was loved for its urban sanctuary vibe. Readers described it as a secure oasis with beautiful grounds and large accommodations. Giraffe Manor in Nairobi, Kenya, took the fifth spot, charming visitors with Rothschild’s giraffes knocking on their windows.
