MARRIOTT INTERNATIONAL EXPANDS ITS PROTEA HOTELS BY MARRIOTT IN AFRICA WITH FIVE NEW DEAL SIGNINGS. THE PROJECTS INCLUDE HOTELS IN BOTSWANA, ETHIOPIA, TANZANIA, AND NIGERIA, SHOWCASING THE BRAND’S GROWTH AND POPULARITY ACROSS DIVERSE AFRICAN DESTINATIONS.

During the Africa Hospitality Investment Forum in Nairobi, Marriott International announced five new deal signings for its Protea Hotels by Marriott in Africa. These signings showcased Marriott’s proactive expansion strategy across diverse African destinations.

Marriott International recognizes the established legacy of Protea Hotels by Marriott in Africa and aims to enhance its footprint on the continent. Karim Cheltout, Regional Vice President – Development, Africa & All-Inclusive, EMEA at Marriott International, expressed excitement about the growth opportunities. He noted the brand’s observation of a rise in conversion projects, where developers seek to transform existing properties into Protea Hotels, while the demand for new build opportunities remains high.

New Projects Announced

During the African Hotel Investment Forum, Marriott International revealed the following projects of Protea Hotels by Marriott in Africa:

1. Protea Hotel by Marriott Serowe, Botswana

Protea Hotel by Marriott Serowe in Botswana is slated to open in 2026. It will offer 155 guest rooms and comprehensive facilities like a full-service restaurant, fitness center, swimming pool, and multiple meeting rooms. Its strategic location between Gaborone and Orapa, near the renowned Khama Rhino Sanctuary, adds to its allure.

2. Protea Hotel by Marriott Bahir Dar, Ethiopia

Protea Hotel by Marriott Bahir Dar marks the brand’s entry into Ethiopia. The property, expected to be rebranded by 2025 after a complete renovation, will feature 127 guest rooms and suites, multiple dining options, a fitness center, and extensive meetings and event space. Situated near Lake Tana and the Blue Nile River, it promises a captivating experience for guests.

3. Protea Hotel by Marriott Zanzibar Stone Town, Tanzania

Protea Hotel by Marriott Zanzibar Stone Town in Tanzania will be a conversion project of an existing property, with an anticipated opening by the end of 2023. Located in Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a sought-after tourist destination, the hotel will offer 26 guest rooms, an all-day dining restaurant, and a rooftop bar, capturing the essence of Zanzibar’s vibrant culture.

4. Protea Hotel by Marriott Abuja Jahi, Nigeria

Protea Hotel by Marriott Abuja Jahi, Nigeria, expected to welcome guests in 2027, will boast 144 well-appointed guest rooms, two food and beverage outlets, a swimming pool, and versatile meeting facilities. Positioned in the developing district of Jahi, in close proximity to bustling commercial areas like Gwarinpa and Jabi, the hotel aims to cater to the growing demand for upscale accommodations in the region.

5. Protea Hotel by Marriott Delta, Nigeria

Protea Hotel by Marriott Delta, Nigeria, set to open in 2024, will feature 108 rooms, four enticing dining venues, meeting facilities, a fitness center, and a swimming pool. Located in Warri, a prominent oil and gas hub in the southern region of Nigeria, the hotel is perfectly positioned to cater to business and leisure travelers seeking quality accommodation options.
